Motivation is fleeting. How many times have you set a worthy goal, and felt the initial rush of excitement that comes from the anticipation of accomplishing it?

How many times has that motivation dwindled in only a few short weeks?

Especially when the results don’t come as quickly as you hoped.

Or,

It’s more difficult than you thought it would be.

Whether it’s losing weight, getting fit, starting a new business or improving your relationship – work is required.

Anything worthwhile requires commitment and dedication.

This is why it’s so important to develop your mindset instead of looking for ways to “motivate” yourself.

It’s about turning inward, instead of outward.

A new gym outfit, a workout buddy, a coach – these things won’t provide motivation.

Motivation comes from within.

You must be your own motivation.

That means developing your humility, patience, and capacity for hard work.

It’s about embracing the lonely path to success.

Mindset is what separates winners from losers.

Achievers from dreamers.

Mindset trumps motivation. Every. Single. Time.

From my book, Forty Daze, A Quest for Self-Improvement:

“If you go to the gym regularly, you know what I’m talking about: it’s hard to find a free weightlifting bench in the first week of January: everyone’s New Year’s Resolution is to get in shape and the gym is bursting with newcomers. Come February, it’s a dead zone. The rush of enthusiasm is over, and only the die-hards and regulars remain. Most people give up on their New Year’s Resolution because getting in shape is harder than they thought it would be.”

Motivation will die. Let mindset and discipline take its place.

In fact, the only “cure” for low motivation is a bit of self-discipline.

Do not ask for motivation.

Ask for strength of mind.

Then you’ll be free from the illusion that you need to “feel motivated” to succeed.

Free from relying on anyone and anything else to “motivate” you to achieve your goals.

Free from the lies and excuses you tell yourself in order to quit when things get hard.

Develop your mindset and you’ll become unstoppable.
